Toshiba M400 tablet, Windows 7 x64, and fingerprint reader

Posted by essjae on October 20, 2009

I struggled with this for quite a while.  No matter what I tried, I couldn’t get the fingerprint software to recognize the reader on the Windows 7 x64 install (x86 works fine).  The drivers were installed, everything looked ok, but I would get a “fingerprint device not installed” error when launching the Upek Protector Suite software.

Turns out, Upek has a newer version out (Protector Suite 2009 for Windows 7)  and its free to download.  I uninstalled the driver and old software, rebooted, then installed the new Upek software, and lo and behold, the reader is recognized and I was able to add my fingerprints.

If you want ClearType over RDP with XP SP3, add the following registry key:

 Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations]
"AllowFontAntiAlias"=dword:00000001"

Thanks ytechie!

Access/View the BIOS/Boot-up screens with WinVPC

Posted by essjae on October 19, 2009

Want to see what’s going on when your VM is booting up with VPC?  When the little VM progress bar is running, you can press SHIFT+ESC and that will show you whats really going on.

As soon as you start the VM, press SHIFT+ESC, when you see the black boot/BIOS page, press DEL immediately and repeatedly and you’ll get into the VM’s BIOS.  You can change the boot-order here, so the VHD is not the first device.

What works and doesn’t work on Windows Virtual PC 7 (Windows VPC) for Windows 7

Posted by essjae on October 19, 2009

I’ve just started a new database, well table, of OSes that work or don’t work under WinVPC.

http://www.essjae.com/virtualization/wwadw.htm

I’m hoping with community support this can be built out similarly to what Jon Maltz had with his VPC2004 site here: http://vpc.visualwin.com/

UltraMon Multi-Monitor Utility

Posted by essjae on October 18, 2009

This is another nice little tool I like. Allows for a taskbar across multiple monitors, spanning wallpapers, etc.

A really nice thing is the licensing.  If it’s for personal use, you only need 1 license for the household.

p.s. The reason I’m posting all this utilities is that I was having a lot of problems with my main Vista x64 box, VPC just stopped working after I’d swapped out the video card and some other apps started to fail, so I decided to format and to a fresh install.  Now, I’ve got to dig up all the apps and utils that I’d installed over the past 2+ years.

BrandonTools Start++ Utility for Vista/Win7

Posted by essjae on October 18, 2009

I stumbled across this not too long ago.

http://brandontools.com/content/StartPlusPlus.aspx

It adds some nice little CLI type features of *nix into Vista or Win7.  For example, from the search or run box, you can type “sudo cmd” and you get a administrator command prompt.

This is another great little tool I like for mounting ISOs on my PCs, works on Vista x64 and W7 x64, and it’s free.

Desktop Icon Position Saver (DIPS) x64

Posted by essjae on October 18, 2009

I love this little tool, works for Vista x64 and W7 x64.  It allows you to save and restore your desktop icons.  Very helpful when upgrading certain vendors video drivers.  This is a rewrite by Serge Baranov of the one written by Jeffrey Richter.
