Can’t get WinVPC on Win7 working? Have a Gigabyte MB?

Posted by essjae on October 25, 2009

You’re not alone.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a common thread in the Microsoft forums, if you’re getting this error, “Cannot start Windows Virtual PC while another virtualization software is running.”

There is a pretty good change you’ve got a Gigabyte MB and need to (1) update to your motherboard’s latest BIOS, or (2) try your motherboard’s latest beta BIOS.

Moving VMs from VPC2007 to Windows Virtual PC? READ THIS FIRST!

Posted by essjae on October 23, 2009

As with all major changes in VPC, you MUST SHUT DOWN your VPC 2007 VMs before you try to migrate them to Windows Virtual PC.

If you don’t, you’ll get an error about the hibernated state not being compatible.  You have 2 choices at this point, move the VM back and shut it down, or delete the saved state file from the VM (.vsv).

Stopping Windows 7 auto-restart after Windows Updates

Posted by essjae on October 21, 2009

I don’t mind Windows Updates, but I do mind Windows deciding that its time to restart my computer for me (I left the computer on with those windows open for a reason…)

You can disable this “feature” via Group Policy.

  1. Run gpedit.msc
  2. Click Administrative Templates under Computer Configuration
  3. Click to expand Windows Components
  4. Go to Windows Update and enable No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic update installations

For those of you that don’t have Pro, Ultimate, or Enterprise:

In Windows Update, click on change settings. Under Important Updates, select ‘Download updates but let me choose whether to install them’

The New Efficiency

Posted by essjae on October 20, 2009

I have to say that I’m pretty excited about Windows 2008 R2, Hyper-V R2, and Exchange 2010 after hearing and seeing them today at “The New Efficiency” conference put on by Microsoft.

I’m also excited to start delving into V-Pro by Intel for my company’s notebook computers!  Remote support from the hardware level!
